Can You Spend a Whole Night at the Haunted Rockport Inn in Indiana?

Though The Rockport Inn in Rockport, Indiana might look more like a private home than a hotel, it's one of the haunted places you can spend a night or longer.

Located in southern Indiana, Rockport's name came from the many rocks nearby. People first began moving to the town in 1818, which led to a post office opening five years later. In the 1850s, a couple moved to Rockport and built a large home. Others came to marvel at the new glass windows it featured.

During the later part of the 19th century, the home was allegedly a stop on the Underground Railroad. Runaway slaves on their way north to freedom in Canada would hide in homes along the way. The owners of the home were against slavery and gave runaways a safe haven, even providing them with food and cold water.

While later owners continued using the building as a home, it would later become a bed and breakfast. Tragedy struck in April of 2018 when the hotel caught on fire. Everyone escaped the blaze, but the fire was so intense that the first floor collapsed on itself. Both the bed and breakfast and the on-site pub, McKenzie's closed, after the fire. Though I saw an article talking about the renovation and a Tripadvisor page, it doesn't look like it's reopened just yet.

Oddly enough, some Rockport locals aren't thrilled about the old inn opening its doors again. Not only did it appear on a list of the most haunted hotels in Indiana, but lots of people who live nearby either experienced strange things or knew someone who did.

Most stories surround the wife of the original owner. She loved her former home so much that she didn't want to leave it. Former owners reported seeing a ghostly woman walking through the halls. Others heard her footsteps – almost always late at night. During its years as a B&B, guests encountered her, too. They claimed to see a friendly woman. Some even smiled or nodded to her. When they turned around to ask her a question, she was no longer there.

Once Indiana's Rockport Inn reopens, book a stay and let me know what you think!
