Haunted Ohio: Coopermill Manor in Zanesville
Low-income housing is prevalent in many parts of Ohio. Residents get help paying for a clean and safe place to live. At the Coopermill Manor in Zanesville, they don't expect to see ghosts but may come across a few.
Built in 1939, the apartment complex looks fairly similar to others from the time period. Each building uses dark brick and has several small porches evenly spaced across the front. Those porches enter into shared hallways to help residents reach their apartments. The complex opened in 1941 as housing for some of the U.S. Army soldiers stationed at the base in Zanesville. Most of the soldiers who lived here moved in with their families, giving the complex a welcoming vibe.
Though I couldn't find when it happened, eventually the Zanesville Metropolitan Housing Authority (ZMHA) took over the 19 acres making up the complex along with all of the 324 units. In 2016, the ZMHA launched a major renovation with plans to spend more than $46,000 on each unit. Renovations included painting each unit, laying down new flooring, bringing the boilers into the modern age, and making minor repairs. The ZMHA also made 18 of the units handicap-accessible.
Legend says a young soldier stationed at the base and living in the complex was upset when he learned the Army called his number. He had a strange feeling he would never see his wife or young child again. The feeling came true when the man died in battle. Neighbors worried every time they saw the men in suits approach an apartment, worrying they were coming with news about their loved ones. When his wife heard the news, she screamed so loudly people could hear her across the complex.
Not long after his death, residents and neighbors began seeing him. Still wearing his uniform, he always seemed to hover in the background and take steps to ensure he didn't bother anyone. Long after the complex became Coopermill Manor, people still claimed to see him.
It's worth noting that some believe the “ghost” is just a local soldier stopping by the complex. I've also seen some state Zanesville has a serious drug problem in the area around the apartments, which they say is why people see the ghost both appear and disappear.
While I have no first-hand experience with the complex, I look forward to hearing from anyone who does. Drop me a comment if you have a story or visited.
