Though sometimes called the Boon Hutch or Boone Hutch Cemetery online, the haunted graveyard in Greencastle, Indiana is actually the Boone Hutcheson Cemetery. Its first burial occurred in 1812 when it was then known as the Boone Cemetery. Residents also called it the Hutcheson Cemetery due to some of the locals buried there. One online source claims the first burial was in 1822 and the last in 1999, but I've seen people visiting their loved ones, which makes me think it's still in use.
According to the local paper, the cemetery actually predates the founding of Putnam County. In 2009, the cemetery's board of directors announced plans to spend $35,000 to acquire more land and add another 3,000 burial sites.
While walking through the Boone Hutcheson Cemetery, it's hard to imagine what it looked like in the early days. Indiana was something of a vast wilderness. It took a lot of hard work, effort, and time just for settlers to reach what is now Putnam County and even more time to build their homes and launch the new community.
Not far from the cemetery is an old cave used by slaves on the Underground Railroad. It's no wonder why this Indiana cemetery is likely haunted. What is odd, however, is the ghost isn't one of the early settlers or even an escaped slave on their way to freedom. This ghost only dates back to the 1950s.
If you ever find yourself in Greencastle and driving down S County Road late at night, keep your eyes peeled for a strange blue light coming from the cemetery. Look closer and you might see a ghostly police officer peering back at you. This officer wears the old-fashioned uniform law enforcement wore during the 50s. Though he doesn't seem to bother anyone, he leaves visitors feeling unsettled.
The cave I mentioned above may also be haunted. Those stopping to pay their respects occasionally see a dark figure standing at the entrance who rushes out of sight when they get close. A few claim this is the ghost of a runaway slave who suffered an injury during his escape. While he made his way to Indiana and found himself close to safety, he passed away in the cave.
One last story concerns the demon dogs who roam the cemetery. Known for their dark and dramatic red eyes that seemingly glow red, they are not friendly or welcoming. Visitors report seeing the animals in the later hours. The dogs run after those who stay a little too late or linger a little too long.
