When it comes to haunted places – especially haunted places in Ohio – you can't go wrong with cemeteries. While Woodland Cemetery in my backyard is one of the state's most haunted, I wanted to kick things off with Mount Unger Cemetery in Adams County. Some also call it Mt. Unger Cemetery or Mount Unger Baptist Cemetery.

Located in Blue Creek, this cemetery has around 100 grave sites. Head down Mount Unger Road until you see the church of the same name up ahead. The cemetery sits right next to the church. Though it looks like many of the other cemeteries scattered across Ohio during the day, things change at night. That's when locals claim that a ghostly man makes his presence known.

According to the classic story, he was once an unhappily married man. No one knows exactly what led him to make a fateful decision, but one night, he came home and murdered his wife. Some say he thought she had an affair, others claim that he thought she would leave him, and still, others say that he killed her in a fit of rage. Regardless of why he did it, he just couldn't stay away.

Distraught over what he did, the man returned to Mount Unger Cemetery every night after work to say goodbye to his wife yet again. Visitors hoping to see their loved ones would often spot him sitting in front of her grave with tears in his eyes. Often clutching flowers in his hands, he traced her name over and over again. It seems as though nothing could keep him away, not even death.

Walking through the cemetery at night is an experience that many visitors will never forget. They claim to sense a feeling of desperation and overwhelming sadness that worsens as they near a certain headstone. Other visitors witnessed a man stumbling through the cemetery, working his way around the graves until he finally found his beloved and dropped to his knees. No matter how long they see him, he always seems to disappear in the blink of an eye.

As legends tend to grow and change, so too did the story behind this ghost. More modern versions claim that he did not murder his wife but that he blamed himself for his death. There are rumors she died in a car accident when he was driving or that she died at home after a long illness while he was away at work. I've also heard from a few locals that he killed himself after her death, having hanged himself in the cemetery. A friend who grew up in the area recently heard that the cemetery is a private, family cemetery and not open to the public.
